The recent news about J.J. Watt, a former NFL defensive end, donating $3 million to the University of Oklahoma’s softball program to help them win the Big Ten championship appears to be a mix-up. Firstly, J.J. Watt is not known to have made such a donation. Secondly, the University of Oklahoma competes in the Big 12 Conference, not the Big Ten.
However, the Oklahoma Sooners’ softball program has indeed received significant financial support in recent years. Notably, Love’s Travel Stops pledged $9 million toward the construction of a new softball stadium, Love’s Field, and committed to matching every other donation dollar for dollar up to $3 million, bringing their total contribution to $12 million. This new facility, located at the northwest corner of South Jenkins Avenue and Imhoff Road, will seat 3,000 fans and includes a 10,500-square-foot indoor training facility, with plans to open for the 2024 season.
Additionally, the Batson family pledged $1 million to the softball program, continuing their longstanding support. This gift is directed toward the building of Love’s Field, reflecting their passion for OU softball.
These substantial contributions have played a pivotal role in enhancing the facilities and resources available to the Oklahoma softball team, supporting their ongoing success in the Big 12 Conference.
