As of March 20, 2025, Brisbane Broncos star player Kotoni Staggs has not been suspended. Instead, he has been sidelined from the upcoming match against the North Queensland Cowboys due to a hip injury. Despite participating in training sessions and being named in the extended squad, Broncos coach Michael Maguire has opted to give Staggs additional time to recover fully, stating, “He was very close to playing, but Kotoni has had a few issues with his injury. It was touch-and-go, but it’s the right thing to do at the moment for Kotoni and allow him to have more time.”
Historically, Staggs has faced disciplinary actions. In June 2021, he was fined $20,000 and suspended for two matches by the NRL for “disreputable conduct at a public venue” in April of that year. The NRL mandated that Staggs complete education and personal rehabilitation programs before returning to play. Staggs acknowledged his mistakes, emphasizing the importance of setting a better example for those who look up to him.
Additionally, in February 2021, Staggs was fined $10,000 for using a homophobic slur at a pub in Dubbo, New South Wales. The NRL required him to complete an education program and meet with NRL CEO Andrew Abdo before being permitted to play again. Abdo emphasized the gravity of Staggs’ language and the responsibility players have to the community, stating, “His language is utterly unacceptable but this is about making sure he understands the impact of that and actually changes.”
As of now, Staggs’ absence from the upcoming game is solely injury-related, with no current suspensions in effect.
