Vancouver, BC – The hockey world was shaken today as news broke that Vancouver Canucks star Elias Pettersson and former captain Henrik Sedin were involved in a serious car accident early Sunday morning. The incident occurred on Highway 1 near Burnaby, where emergency crews responded to a multi-vehicle collision around 7:15 a.m.
According to initial reports from the RCMP, the accident was caused by a vehicle that lost control due to heavy rain and hydroplaning, which led to a chain reaction involving three other cars. Pettersson and Sedin were reportedly in the same SUV returning from a private team function when the crash happened. Both were wearing seatbelts, which authorities say likely prevented more severe injuries.
Elias Pettersson, 26, was transported to Vancouver General Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, including a fractured wrist and minor head trauma. Henrik Sedin, 44, who retired in 2018 but still serves as part of the Canucks’ player development staff, sustained bruised ribs and a concussion. Both are currently in stable condition and recovering under close medical supervision.
Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin addressed the media with a somber tone. “We are extremely thankful that both Elias and Henrik are safe and receiving the care they need. Our thoughts are with them and their families during this difficult time,” he said. He also confirmed that Pettersson will be out indefinitely pending further evaluation.
Witnesses at the scene described the crash as violent, with debris scattered across multiple lanes. One bystander, Michelle Wong, told reporters, “It looked like the SUV spun several times before hitting the guardrail. I was shocked to later find out who was inside.” Emergency crews worked for over two hours to clear the scene and restore traffic flow.
The NHL community and fans from around the world have taken to social media to express their support. Teammates, rival players, and even league officials posted messages wishing both men a speedy recovery. Pettersson, one of the league’s brightest talents, has been a cornerstone of the Canucks’ lineup, while Sedin remains one of the most respected figures in franchise history.
As investigations continue into the exact cause of the crash, both the Canucks organization and local authorities have urged the public to respect the privacy of the individuals and their families. Updates on Pettersson and Sedin’s recovery will be provided by team medical staff in the coming days.
