A devastating maritime tragedy unfolded in the early hours of Thursday as a luxury cruise ship operated by Regent Seven Seas Cruises capsized in the North Atlantic Ocean, with over a thousand passengers and crew members feared dead.
The vessel, identified as the Seven Seas Splendor, was en route from Lisbon to Miami when it reportedly encountered extreme weather conditions, including rogue waves and hurricane-force winds. Emergency distress signals were sent out at approximately 3:45 AM GMT, just before all communication was lost.
According to preliminary reports, the ship carried more than 1,800 people, including passengers from over 20 countries. Rescue operations are currently underway, led by the U.S. Coast Guard and international maritime authorities. However, rough seas and poor visibility are severely hampering efforts.
Survivors pulled from lifeboats described a scene of chaos and terror as the vessel tilted rapidly before overturning. “It was like a nightmare. People were screaming, things were flying, and the ship just started to roll,” one survivor told a local news outlet.
This marks one of the deadliest cruise disasters in recent history. Regent Seven Seas Cruises has yet to release a full statement but expressed “deep sorrow” and pledged full cooperation with authorities.
