Tragedy at Sea: Cruise Ship Capsizes Off Mediterranean Coast, Dozens Feared Dead..

In a devastating maritime tragedy, a boat carrying migrants capsized off the Italian island of Lampedusa in the Mediterranean Sea on March 18, 2025. The vessel, which had departed from Sfax, Tunisia, began to deflate a few hours into its journey due to adverse weather conditions, leading to the deaths of six individuals and leaving 40 others missing.

 

Rescue operations conducted by the Italian Coast Guard and Frontex, the European Union’s border agency, managed to save ten survivors from Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Guinea, and Mali .

 

This incident highlights the increasing number of migrants attempting perilous crossings of the Mediterranean Sea in search of refuge. The International Organization for Migration reported 248 migrant deaths in the Eastern Mediterranean during January and February 2025 alone . The tragedy underscores the urgent need for comprehensive international efforts to address the root causes of migration and to ensure safer, legal pathways for those seeking asylum.
