Toronto, ON – May 3, 2025 — The city of Toronto and the hockey world are reeling after news broke late Friday evening that Toronto Maple Leafs superstars Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner were involved in a devastating high-speed car crash on the Gardiner Expressway. The collision occurred just before midnight and involved two vehicles, leaving both Matthews and Marner in critical condition.

According to the Toronto Police Service, the players were traveling westbound on the Gardiner when their vehicle, a high-performance sports car, lost control and collided with a guardrail before being struck by another vehicle. Emergency services were called immediately, and both Matthews and Marner had to be extracted from the wreckage by Toronto Fire Services using the Jaws of Life.

Paramedics transported both players to St. Michael’s Hospital, where they remain in the intensive care unit. Sources close to the team have confirmed that both suffered multiple fractures and internal injuries. While doctors say they are stable, the next 24 to 48 hours are considered critical for both athletes.

The Toronto Maple Leafs released a brief statement early Saturday morning: “We are devastated by the news regarding Auston and Mitch. Our thoughts are with them, their families, and all those affected. We are working closely with local authorities and medical personnel to support them in any way we can.”

Fans across Toronto gathered outside Scotiabank Arena to leave flowers, jerseys, and handwritten notes of support. On social media, #PrayForAustonAndMitch quickly began trending across Canada and the U.S., as hockey fans, teammates, and NHL teams shared their heartfelt messages and prayers.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman also released a statement: “Our hearts go out to Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, their families, teammates, and fans. These young men have inspired a generation of hockey players, and we stand with them as they fight through this unimaginable situation.”

As the investigation continues into what caused the crash, police have not confirmed whether speed, alcohol, or other factors played a role. The Leafs’ playoff hopes now hang in uncertainty, but for the team, the focus has clearly shifted to the recovery of their two beloved stars. Updates on their condition are expected in the coming days.
