Sunderland’s young star Jobe Bellingham has revealed the player he considers the greatest of all time in the English Football League (EFL), and his choice pays tribute to both his roots and a legendary figure at Birmingham City.
The 18-year-old midfielder, who joined Sunderland from Birmingham City in 2023, named former Blues captain Paul Robinson as his EFL GOAT (Greatest of All Time) during a recent interview. The choice surprised some fans, but for Bellingham, the decision is deeply personal and rooted in respect and admiration.
“Paul Robinson was someone I looked up to when I was coming through at Birmingham,” said Bellingham. “His leadership, his attitude on the pitch, and how he carried himself as a professional made a huge impression on me. He might not be the flashiest name, but for me, he embodies what the EFL is all about.”
Robinson, who had a long and respected career with clubs like Watford, West Bromwich Albion, and ultimately Birmingham City, was known for his tough tackling, vocal presence, and commitment to the badge. He made over 700 appearances in English football and was a key figure in the Birmingham City side during Jobe’s formative years at the club.
Bellingham also spoke about the broader impact players like Robinson have on younger talents. “You learn a lot from watching how a veteran like Robbo trains, plays, and leads,” he added. “He was a big part of the culture at Birmingham and set the standard for the younger lads like me.”
The gesture is particularly heartfelt given the Bellingham family’s strong ties to Birmingham City. Jobe’s older brother, Jude Bellingham, also came through the ranks at the club before moving to Borussia Dortmund and later to Real Madrid. Both brothers credit their early development at Birmingham as vital to their growth.
