
The University of South Carolina (USC) has welcomed back alumna Karsen Ochs Hanna as the new director of softball operations, a move that underscores her dedication to enhancing the Gamecocks’ softball program. Ochs Hanna, who pitched for USC from 2020 to 2023, brings a wealth of experience both on and off the field.
During her collegiate career, Ochs Hanna made significant contributions to the Gamecocks. She appeared in 82 games, starting 29, and pitched over 210 innings, achieving 17 wins and three saves. Notably, she ranks second in program history for relief appearances. Her academic achievements are equally impressive; she was a four-time member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll and a three-time National Fastpitch Coaches Association Scholar-Athlete. In 2023, she earned a spot on the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team.
Ochs Hanna graduated summa cum laude from USC, obtaining a Bachelor of Arts in public relations in May 2023. She furthered her education with a Master of Science in coaching education, focusing on collegiate sports and mental performance, completed in August 2024.
Post-graduation, she remained active in the softball community. In 2024, she served as a broadcast analyst for USC’s SEC Network+ games and took on the role of head softball coach at Heathwood Hall Episcopal School. Additionally, she worked with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, mentoring eight collegiate teams, including five softball programs.
Head coach Ashley Chastain Woodard expressed enthusiasm about Ochs Hanna’s return, stating, “It’s always a great day for our program when you have the opportunity to bring your own home.” She praised Ochs Hanna’s dedication, skills, and passion for the program, emphasizing the positive impact she will have on the team’s pursuit of excellence.
Ochs Hanna herself is eager to contribute, noting, “I am so excited to join the staff. Their Carolina roots run deep, as do mine, and I’m excited to come alongside them to continue building this program towards greatness.” She expressed gratitude for her student-athlete experience at USC and looks forward to enhancing the experience for current and future players.
Her return signifies a commitment to leveraging her experience and passion to further elevate the Gamecocks’ softball program.
