Ryan Lindgren, a defenseman for the Colorado Avalanche, has terminated his contract with the team following a reported confrontation with the head coach. Lindgren, 27, was acquired by the Avalanche from the New York Rangers on March 1, 2025, in a trade that also involved forward Jimmy Vesey and the rights to defensive prospect Hank Kempf. In return, the Rangers received forward Juuso Parssinen, defenseman Calvin de Haan, and conditional 2025 NHL Draft picks.

Prior to the trade, Lindgren had spent his entire NHL career with the Rangers, amassing 99 points (12 goals, 87 assists) in 387 regular-season games and contributing to two Conference Finals appearances. His departure from the Avalanche comes amid reports of a disagreement with the coaching staff, leading to the mutual decision to part ways.

Lindgren is now an unrestricted free agent and is reportedly in advanced discussions to re-sign with the New York Rangers. The Rangers, who are currently in the thick of the playoff hunt, could benefit from Lindgren’s defensive prowess and familiarity with their system. However, as of now, no official agreement has been announced.
