Carnival Cruise Line has canceled additional sailings of its Carnival Freedom ship following a fire that broke out on March 23, 2024, while the vessel was approximately 20 miles off the coast of Eleuthera Island, Bahamas. The fire ignited on the port side of the ship’s exhaust funnel around 3:15 p.m. local time. Witnesses reported a possible lightning strike as the cause, though this has not been confirmed, and the investigation is ongoing.

The ship’s crew promptly extinguished the fire, and no injuries were reported among passengers or crew members. However, the damage to the exhaust funnel was more extensive than initially assessed. As a result, Carnival Cruise Line announced the cancellation of the cruises scheduled to depart on March 25 and March 29 from Port Canaveral. Affected passengers were offered full refunds and future cruise credits.
