Clearwater, FL – Tragedy struck on Sunday evening as Florida authorities declared a “mass casualty” event following a severe boat crash near the Clearwater Memorial Causeway Bridge. The incident, which occurred around 6:45 p.m., involved a commercial vessel carrying over a dozen passengers.
According to officials, the boat collided with a channel marker at high speed, causing it to capsize and throw passengers into the water. Emergency crews, including Clearwater Fire & Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard, quickly responded to the scene. Multiple people were rescued, but several were critically injured and transported to nearby hospitals. At least one fatality has been confirmed.
“This is a tragic day for our community,” said Clearwater Fire Chief Scott Ehlers during a press briefing. “Our hearts go out to the families affected.”
Authorities are continuing their search for any missing individuals and have launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash. Weather conditions at the time were reported to be clear, and officials are examining whether speed, mechanical failure, or operator error played a role.
The Clearwater Memorial Causeway remains open, but boat traffic in the area is restricted as the investigation continues.
