Queensland Maroons selector Darren Lockyer has shed light on the omission of Brisbane Broncos’ Selwyn Cobbo from the State of Origin Game 2 squad. Despite Cobbo’s impactful performance in Game 1, Lockyer revealed that the 22-year-old was dealing with multiple niggling injuries that were affecting him both physically and mentally.
Cobbo openly discussed his condition with coach Billy Slater, expressing concerns about his ability to perform at the required level for such a high-stakes match. Lockyer commended Cobbo’s honesty, stating, “He was pretty open and honest with Bill about whether he was capable of performing in that arena. There is nowhere to hide in Origin.”
Given Queensland’s 1-0 lead in the series, Slater had the flexibility to make this decision without compromising the team’s position. Lockyer emphasized that Cobbo’s time with the Maroons is far from over, suggesting that once he recovers fully, he will undoubtedly don the Maroons jersey again. He noted, “He is young, and I think his time (with the Maroons), it’s not like it’s over. He will be back in the Maroons jersey at some point.”
This situation presented a selection challenge for coach Billy Slater, as he had to balance the immediate needs of the team with the long-term well-being of a promising player. By prioritizing Cobbo’s health and acknowledging his honest self-assessment, the Maroons’ management demonstrated a commitment to both player welfare and team performance.
