The UK government has approved the £200 million Viking Carbon Capture Storage (CCS) Pipeline project, granting development consent on April 9, 2025. This initiative aims to transport carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions from industrial processes in the Humber region to a subsea reservoir off the Lincolnshire coast.
The project encompasses the construction of a CO₂ intake facility at Immingham on the Humber Estuary’s south side, the installation of a transportation pipeline extending from Immingham to Theddlethorpe on Lincolnshire’s east coast, and the establishment of a gas transportation facility at Theddlethorpe. By 2030, the pipeline is projected to transport and store up to 10 million tonnes of CO₂ annually, with an increase to 15 million tonnes by 2035.
This approval represents a significant advancement in the UK’s efforts to reduce industrial carbon emissions and combat climate change. The Viking CCS Pipeline is part of a broader strategy to develop carbon capture and storage infrastructure, supporting the nation’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
