Joel Tomkins has been appointed as the interim head coach of Catalans Dragons following Steve McNamara’s departure on May 21, 2025. Tomkins, a former England international and dual-code rugby player, has been with the Dragons since October 2024, serving as a defensive assistant coach alongside Ryan Sheridan. His promotion comes after McNamara’s exit, which was influenced by the team’s disappointing seventh-place finish in the 2024 Super League season, missing out on the playoffs .
Tomkins’ coaching journey began at Wigan Warriors, where he returned in 2024 as Youth Performance Coach. He led the scholarship team and assisted with the academy, gaining valuable experience before transitioning to Catalans . His appointment is part of a broader restructuring at Catalans, which includes the addition of several new signings for the 2025 season .
Tomkins’ first challenge as head coach will be leading the Dragons against his former club, Wigan Warriors, in an eagerly anticipated Super League
