He was 130kgs’: Next Panthers star emerges in epic comeback after five years in NRL wilderness

Sione Fonua, affectionately known as “Johnny,” has made a remarkable return to rugby league after a five-year hiatus. Once a teenage prodigy, Fonua represented New South Wales in the under-18s in 2017 but stepped away from the sport in 2020.

During his time away, his weight reached 130 kilograms. In 2024, he reignited his passion for the game, joining the Brothers club in Penrith. His dedication and impressive performances led to a spot in the Panthers’ NSW Cup team, where he played three matches, showcasing his versatility by covering fullback and coming off the bench.

Fonua’s resurgence continued in a trial match against the Canberra Raiders, starting in the centres and earning praise from Penrith legend Greg Alexander, who highlighted Fonua’s journey from leaving the game to becoming a potential first-grade player. NRL premiership winner Michael Ennis also commended Fonua’s calmness under pressure and powerful play, suggesting he could make his NRL debut this season. Fonua’s story exemplifies resilience and determination, marking a significant comeback in the NRL arena.
