Western Michigan University has added a familiar face to its coaching staff with the hiring of former Michigan State forward Thomas Kithier as an assistant coach. Known for his high basketball IQ, strong work ethic, and leadership on the court, Kithier brings a wealth of experience and a winning mindset to the Broncos’ program.

Kithier played three seasons under legendary coach Tom Izzo at Michigan State, where he was part of multiple NCAA Tournament runs and gained valuable insight into high-level competition. He later transferred to Valparaiso, further developing his understanding of the game before injuries curtailed his playing career. Now, he’s channeling his passion into coaching, eager to help shape the next generation of student-athletes.

At Western Michigan, Kithier will focus on player development, recruiting, and building a culture of toughness and accountability. His recent playing experience gives him a unique ability to connect with today’s athletes, offering guidance both on and off the court.

Head Coach Dwayne Stephens, a former MSU assistant himself, praised the addition, calling Kithier “a competitor with a great basketball mind.” The Broncos look forward to the energy and insight he brings to the program.
