The University of Michigan has announced plans to erect a statue of legendary cornerback Charles Woodson outside Michigan Stadium, recognizing his lasting legacy and profound impact on the football program. As reported by ESPN, the tribute will celebrate Woodson’s achievements both on and off the field, highlighting his role in Michigan’s national championship run in 1997 and his historic Heisman Trophy win—still the only primarily defensive player to ever receive the honor.
Set to be unveiled during the 2025 football season, the statue will serve as a lasting symbol of excellence and inspiration for future generations of Wolverines. Woodson, who later enjoyed a Hall of Fame career in the NFL, remains one of Michigan’s most iconic athletes. The university cited his leadership, competitive spirit, and contributions to the program’s national prominence as key reasons for the tribute.
The unveiling ceremony will be part of a larger celebration weekend, featuring alumni events, special appearances, and a halftime recognition during a marquee home game. Athletic Director Warde Manuel emphasized the statue’s role in “immortalizing one of the greatest players to ever wear the maize and blue.” More details on the celebration schedule are expected in the coming months.
