Luka Dončić’s recent trade to the Los Angeles Lakers has significantly impacted his contract prospects. Originally, with the Dallas Mavericks, Dončić was eligible for a five-year, $345 million supermax extension in the 2025 offseason. However, the move to Los Angeles altered this trajectory.
Now, the Lakers can offer him a four-year, $228.6 million extension starting in the 2026-27 season. To optimize his earnings, Dončić might sign a three-year extension with a player option for the 2028-29 season, aligning with his tenth NBA year and making him eligible for a five-year, $418 million contract beginning in 2028-29.
This strategic approach allows Dončić to recoup potential earnings lost due to the trade. Despite the immediate financial adjustments, the Lakers’ market offers substantial opportunities for endorsements and brand growth, potentially offsetting any short-term income reductions.
