The recent claim that Franco Harris is returning to Penn State in a leading coaching role is inaccurate. Franco Harris, the esteemed former Nittany Lion and Pro Football Hall of Famer, passed away on December 20, 2022, at the age of 72. During his time at Penn State from 1969 to 1971, Harris was a pivotal figure in the football program, contributing significantly to the team’s impressive 29-4 record over those three seasons.
His legacy extended beyond his playing years, as he remained an active and influential member of both the Penn State and Pittsburgh communities.
In honor of his enduring impact, Penn State has undertaken several initiatives. Notably, on December 12, 2023, the university renamed its Pittsburgh center to the Franco Harris Pittsburgh Center at Penn State. This dedication serves to commemorate Harris’s contributions and to inspire future generations through programs and resources aimed at positively impacting the Pittsburgh region. Additionally, the Penn State All-Sports Museum unveiled a mosaic mural on November 12, 2023, celebrating Harris’s life and legacy.
While these honors reflect the profound respect and admiration for Franco Harris, there is no truth to reports of his return to Penn State in any coaching capacity.
