Collingwood defender John Noble has officially departed the club after rejecting a new contract offer and requesting a trade to the Gold Coast Suns. The 27-year-old, who was contracted until the end of 2026, cited a desire to be closer to family as the primary reason for his decision. Noble’s move was finalized on October 15, 2024, as part of a significant three-club trade involving Collingwood, Gold Coast, and Port Adelaide.
Noble’s journey with Collingwood began in the 2019 mid-season draft, where he was selected with pick No.14. Over six seasons, he became a consistent presence in the Magpies’ defense, playing 112 games. However, his omission from the 2023 finals series, despite playing all home-and-away games that season, was a significant setback. Noble later admitted that missing out on the premiership team contributed to his decision to seek opportunities elsewhere.
In 2024, Noble managed to regain his spot in the team, participating in 20 games. Despite his contributions, Collingwood’s overall performance declined, with the team finishing outside the top eight. This, combined with personal considerations, led Noble to request a trade to an interstate club, specifically the Gold Coast Suns.
The trade deal was multifaceted. Collingwood received Dan Houston and pick 58 in the 2024 AFL National Draft. Gold Coast acquired John Noble, pick 39, and two future first-round selections. Port Adelaide received Jack Lukosius, Joe Richards, Rory Atkins, and picks 13, 29, 36, and 50.
Noble’s move to the Suns is seen as a strategic acquisition for Gold Coast, aiming to bolster their defensive lineup with his experience and skill set. Gold Coast’s GM of Player Talent & Strategy, Craig Cameron, expressed enthusiasm about Noble’s addition, highlighting his potential to enhance the team’s rebound defense.
Reflecting on his time at Collingwood, Noble expressed gratitude to the club for the opportunities provided. He acknowledged the support from coaches, staff, and teammates, emphasizing the lifelong friendships formed during his tenure. Collingwood’s Head of Football Strategy, Justin Leppitsch, also praised Noble’s contributions, noting his resilience and the significant role he played in the team’s defense.
As Noble embarks on this new chapter with the Gold Coast Suns, both he and the club are optimistic about the future. His experience and defensive prowess are expected to be valuable assets as the Suns aim to ascend in the AFL standings.
