Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube recently delivered a pointed message to star forward Auston Matthews, emphasizing accountability following a series of lackluster performances. During a 5-1 loss to the St.
Louis Blues, Berube was visibly animated on the bench, directing criticism at Matthews after a defensive lapse led to a goal. Berube clarified his actions, stating, “It’s just accountability to everybody… It’s nothing personal. It’s just me being a coach and doing what I think is right at the time.”
Matthews, who was on the ice for three goals against in consecutive games for the first time in his career, acknowledged the coach’s approach. He remarked, “It’s hockey. You get yelled at sometimes. Coach yells, you just kind of take it as it goes… It’s not anything you take personal.”
This exchange underscores Berube’s commitment to instilling a culture of responsibility within the team, holding even top players to high standards. The Leafs aim to rebound from their recent slump as they prepare for upcoming matchups.
