Yankees Pitcher Jimmy Cordero Suspended for Remainder of Season Under MLB’s Domestic Violence Policy

July 5, 2023 – Major League Baseball (MLB) has announced that New York Yankees pitcher Jimmy Cordero has been suspended for the remainder of the 2023 season, including the postseason, due to a violation of the league’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, and Child Abuse Policy.

MLB issued a statement confirming that Cordero accepted the suspension following an investigation into the incident. While specific details of the violation were not disclosed, the league emphasized its commitment to maintaining a safe and respectful environment.

The Yankees released a statement in response to the suspension:

“There is no justification for domestic violence, and we fully support MLB’s enforcement of its policies. We respect the league’s decision and will continue to support any measures that uphold accountability and integrity within our organization.”

Cordero, a 31-year-old right-handed reliever, had been a key bullpen piece for the Yankees this season, posting a 3.86 ERA over 31 appearances. His absence leaves a significant gap in the team’s pitching depth as they continue their push for a postseason spot.

Under the terms of the suspension, Cordero will not receive pay or service time for the remainder of the season. He has not publicly commented on the matter.

MLB has maintained a strict stance on domestic violence incidents, previously suspending players such as Trevor Bauer, Aroldis Chapman, and Domingo Germán under the same policy.

The Yankees are expected to make a roster move in the coming days to compensate for Cordero’s absence as they continue

their season.
