In a landmark decision, the University of Tennessee has appointed Kim Caldwell as the new head coach of the Lady Volunteers basketball team. This marks the first time since the legendary Pat Summitt’s tenure that Tennessee has selected a head coach without prior ties to the program.

Caldwell’s coaching career has been characterized by rapid success. She began at her alma mater, Glenville State, leading the Pioneers to an NCAA Division II National Championship in 2022. Her tenure there included six regular-season conference championships and four tournament titles.

In March 2023, Caldwell transitioned to Marshall University. In her inaugural season, she guided the Thundering Herd to a 26-7 record, clinching both the Sun Belt Conference regular-season and tournament championships. This achievement secured Marshall’s first NCAA Tournament berth since 1997. Her outstanding performance earned her the Maggie Dixon Award, recognizing the nation’s top rookie head coach.

Tennessee’s Athletic Director, Danny White, expressed confidence in Caldwell’s ability to rejuvenate the Lady Vols program, stating that her dynamic coaching style is poised to restore the team to national prominence.

Caldwell herself acknowledged the weight of following in Pat Summitt’s footsteps, expressing both honor and humility in leading such a storied program. She is eager to build upon the Lady Vols’ rich tradition and is enthusiastic about the future.

As the Lady Vols prepare for the upcoming season, expectations are high. Fans and analysts alike are optimistic that Caldwell’s proven track record and innovative coaching approach will usher in a new era of success for Tennessee women’s basketball.
