In a move that has left fans and analysts stunned, the Dallas Mavericks traded their star player, Luka Dončić, to the Los Angeles Lakers in February 2025. The blockbuster deal saw the Mavericks receive Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a future first-round draft pick in exchange for Dončić and other assets.
Dončić, a five-time All-Star and the face of the Mavericks since 2018, expressed his mixed emotions in a heartfelt farewell letter to Dallas fans. He wrote, “Seven years ago, I came here as a teenager to pursue my dream of playing basketball at the highest level. I thought I’d spend my career here and I wanted so badly to bring you a championship.” He added, “Dallas is a special place, and Mavs fans are special fans.”
The trade has been met with widespread criticism. NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal remarked that the Mavericks are “under a curse” following Dončić’s departure, highlighting the team’s subsequent struggles with injuries and performance.
Reports have surfaced suggesting internal concerns within the Mavericks organization regarding Dončić’s conditioning and commitment. It was revealed that the team allegedly fabricated a wrist injury in November 2024 to encourage him to improve his fitness, a strategy that ultimately failed and contributed to the decision to trade
