After serving as an assistant coach for teams like the New York Knicks and Atlanta Hawks, he took on the role of head coach for the Brooklyn Nets from 2016 to 2020. Following a stint with the Golden State Warriors as an assistant, where he contributed to their 2022 NBA Championship, Atkinson assumed the head coaching position for the Cavaliers in June 2024.
