Collingwood Football Club’s head coach, Craig McRae, has recently addressed criticisms and reaffirmed his commitment to the team. Following a 15-point loss to St Kilda in March 2024, McRae faced scrutiny from journalist Caroline Wilson for not acknowledging the opposing team’s performance during his post-match press conference. Wilson remarked that McRae’s comments “reflected a ‘me, me, me’ mentality.”
In response, McRae publicly apologized, stating, “I want to be humble and gracious, and if I didn’t give St Kilda enough credit, I should have.” AFL legend Leigh Matthews defended McRae, asserting that the coach “did not need to apologise” and that his focus during press conferences should be on his own team’s performance.
More recently, McRae has been preparing for challenging match-ups, such as the one against the Western Bulldogs’ Sam Darcy, emphasizing team defense and supporting the backline to counter Darcy’s impact. Additionally, McRae has addressed internal matters, including a warning from the AFL for inappropriate conduct during a game against the Giants. He acknowledged his mistake, emphasizing the importance of setting a good example for the sport and younger coaches.
Through these actions, McRae demonstrates his dedication to personal growth and his unwavering commitment to Collingwood, striving to lead by example and maintain a focus on the team’s success.
