Mansfield player jailed for 14 months days before Birmingham City match..full details

Just days before Mansfield Town’s crucial FA Cup tie against Birmingham City, midfielder George Williams has been sentenced to 14 months in prison. The 25-year-old was found guilty of assault occasioning actual bodily harm following an incident outside a Nottingham nightclub in late 2023. The court heard that Williams had punched a man during an altercation, causing serious facial injuries.

Judge Sarah Thompson described the attack as “unprovoked and reckless,” emphasizing that professional athletes are expected to act as role models. Williams, who had pleaded not guilty, showed little emotion as the sentence was handed down at Nottingham Crown Court on Wednesday.

Mansfield Town released a brief statement expressing disappointment over the situation. “We are aware of the court’s verdict and will cooperate with relevant authorities. The club will make no further comment at this time.”

The midfielder had been a regular fixture in Mansfield’s squad this season and was expected to play in the upcoming FA Cup fourth-round clash against Championship side Birmingham City. His sudden absence is a blow to manager Nigel Clough, who now faces the challenge of reshuffling his midfield just days before the high-stakes encounter.
