Legendary Penn State Coach Joe Paterno Passes Away at 85, Months After Departure

Joe Paterno, the iconic head coach who led Penn State’s football program for more than four decades, passed away at the age of 85. His death came just months after his departure from the university in the wake of a child abuse scandal involving former assistant coach Jerry Sandusky—a tragedy that overshadowed the end of his otherwise stellar career. Paterno, affectionately known as “JoePa,” holds the record for the most victories by a Division I football coach, amassing 409 wins during his tenure.

Paterno’s family released a heartfelt statement, saying, “Our father died as he lived – with dignity, integrity, and courage. He was a man devoted to his family, his university, and his players. He never stopped fighting for what he believed was right, and he remained hopeful until the end.” The statement also thanked the public for their support during his final days.

While his legacy was tarnished in his final months, many still remember him as a dedicated educator and mentor who built Penn State into a national powerhouse. His influence stretched far beyond the football field, making him a complex but unforgettable figure in the history of college athletics.
