Earlier today, the Viking Sky, a Norwegian cruise ship carrying 1,373 passengers and crew, encountered severe storm conditions off Norway’s coast. The vessel suffered an engine failure due to low lubricating oil levels, leading to a loss of power. This malfunction left the ship drifting perilously close to rocky shores, prompting a mayday call. In response, Norwegian authorities initiated a daring rescue operation involving five helicopters, airlifting 479 individuals to safety amid towering waves and fierce winds. The operation continued through the night, with passengers describing harrowing scenes of furniture sliding uncontrollably and ceilings collapsing due to the ship’s violent movements. By Sunday morning, the ship’s crew managed to restart the engines, and the Viking Sky limped into the port of Molde under its own power, carrying approximately 900 passengers and crew. Investigations are underway to determine why the ship ventured into such hazardous conditions despite existing storm warnings.
