Penn State’s wrestling team has clinched its fourth consecutive NCAA Division I Men’s Wrestling Championship, marking their 12th title in 14 years under coach Cael Sanderson. The Nittany Lions secured the championship early during the tournament held at Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center from March 20–22, 2025.
A standout performance came from Carter Starocci, who made history by becoming the first wrestler to win five NCAA titles. Starocci achieved this feat by defeating Northern Iowa’s Parker Keckeisen 4-3 in the 184-pound final. Additionally, Mitchell Mesenbrink claimed his first individual title at 165 pounds, contributing to Penn State’s dominance.
The team’s depth was evident, with all 10 Nittany Lion wrestlers earning All-American honors—a first in program history. This collective effort propelled Penn State to a record-breaking team score of 177 points, surpassing their previous record.
Coach Sanderson, now with 12 national titles, continues to solidify his legacy in collegiate wrestling. As the Nittany Lions celebrate this achievement, they remain focused on future challenges and maintaining their standard of excellence.
