Dale Earnhardt Jr., co-owner of JR Motorsports, has expressed enthusiasm about the team’s potential expansion into the NASCAR Cup Series. In a June 2024 interview, he mentioned the possibility of investing in a Cup Series charter, viewing it as a long-term asset for his family. However, he acknowledged the challenges involved and suggested that JR Motorsports owning and operating a Cup team might not be imminent.

In January 2025, reports indicated that JR Motorsports was preparing for a significant announcement related to the Daytona 500, fueling speculation about their Cup Series debut. This speculation was confirmed in February 2025, when the team secured a spot in the Daytona 500 with driver Justin Allgaier, marking a historic milestone for the organization.
