Rapid Bucharest has made a significant move by signing Gabonese striker Aaron Boupendza, the former Süper Lig top scorer with Hatayspor. This transfer comes after Boupendza’s brief stint with FC Cincinnati in Major League Soccer, where he scored three goals and provided two assists in 17 appearances.
The transfer saga took an unexpected turn when Boupendza was initially announced as a signing by Egyptian club Zamalek on September 8. However, Boupendza reportedly stated, “I don’t remember when I signed,” and proceeded to finalize his move to Rapid Bucharest. This led Zamalek to consider filing a complaint with UEFA against the player.
Rapid Bucharest’s head coach, Marius Șumudică, played a pivotal role in securing Boupendza’s signature. Șumudică expressed his satisfaction, stating, “We have reached an agreement, and the official paperwork is being prepared. After his visa procedures, he will come to Bucharest. If it weren’t for me, he wouldn’t have come to Rapid, but the financial effort of the club was also significant. Bringing such a player here is not easy.”
This acquisition underscores Rapid Bucharest’s ambition to strengthen their attacking options and make a mark in the Romanian league. The club’s proactive approach in the transfer market reflects their commitment to achieving competitive success in the upcoming season.
