In a remarkable performance during the NCAA Tournament’s first round, Tennessee Volunteers’ senior point guard Zakai Zeigler recorded a double-double with 12 points and 12 assists, leading his team to a 77-62 victory over Wofford. This achievement elevated Zeigler’s career assists total to 726, surpassing the previous school record of 715 held by Johnny Darden since 1979.

Zeigler’s consistent playmaking has been pivotal for Tennessee throughout his collegiate career. His assist totals have progressively increased each season, culminating in a school-record 244 assists this year. This surpasses the previous single-season record of 227 assists set by Rodney Woods in the 1974-75 season.

Reflecting on breaking a nearly 50-year-old record, Zeigler expressed immense gratitude, attributing his success to the support of his coaches and teammates. Notably, Johnny Darden was present at Rupp Arena to congratulate Zeigler in person, underscoring the significance of this milestone.

Zeigler’s exceptional court vision and defensive prowess have not only etched his name in Tennessee’s record books but have also been instrumental in the Volunteers’ successful season. With a 28-7 record, Tennessee advances to face the winner of the UCLA-Utah State matchup in the next round, bolstered by Zeigler’s leadership and playmaking abilities.
