In a significant development for Oklahoma Sooners football, quarterback John Mateer has committed to the team after transferring from Washington State University. Mateer, who entered the transfer portal following the 2024 season, chose Oklahoma over other contenders, including Miami.
Mateer’s decision is notably influenced by his strong relationship with Oklahoma’s new offensive coordinator, Ben Arbuckle. The two previously worked together at Washington State, where Arbuckle served as the offensive coordinator. Mateer praised Arbuckle as “a great man” and “a great mentor,” highlighting their successful collaboration and his familiarity with Arbuckle’s offensive system as key factors in his transfer.
In his standout 2024 season at Washington State, Mateer led the nation with a combined 44 total touchdowns, comprising 29 passing and 15 rushing. He accumulated 3,139 passing yards with a 64.6% completion rate and added 826 rushing yards, averaging 4.6 yards per carry.
Oklahoma’s head coach, Brent Venables, is optimistic that Mateer’s dual-threat capabilities will bolster the Sooners’ offense, especially after the departure of former quarterback Jackson Arnold to Auburn. Venables anticipates that Mateer and Arbuckle will play pivotal roles in revitalizing the team’s offensive performance in the upcoming season.
