I couldn’t find any recent news about former Raiders Head Coach Art Shell launching a foundation focused on youth empowerment, mental health support, and promoting social change. However, there are notable initiatives aligning with these goals:
David Oyelowo’s Creative Arts Summit in Nigeria
In late January 2025, actor David Oyelowo hosted a creative arts summit in Enugu, Nigeria, through his David Oyelowo Leadership Scholarship for Girls and the GEANCO Foundation. This event aimed to uplift young women affected by terrorism and gender inequality. Supported by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the summit featured discussions on acting, music, photography, AI, and digital art. Oyelowo emphasized that the creative arts can equip young women with diverse life skills applicable beyond artistic careers. The scholarship program provides full tuition, medical care, and emotional support to the participants. Approximately 50 young women attended, with support from Oyelowo’s wife, Jessica, and actress Folake Olowofoyeku. The initiative seeks to transform the educational and personal prospects of young Nigerian women, showcasing the potential of the nation’s cultural resources and human talent.
Art Therapy Initiatives in Nigeria
Art therapy has emerged as a significant tool for addressing mental health challenges among Nigerian youths. Organizations like The Sunshine Initiative offer free art therapy sessions to individuals aged 15 to 25 dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, and stress. These programs provide a safe space for self-expression and emotional healing, helping participants process complex emotions and build resilience. For instance, Chinedu Ogoh, a 21-year-old from Lagos, found solace in art therapy after facing familial and emotional challenges, crediting it with helping him regain emotional balance and refocus on his studies.
Similarly, in northeast Nigeria, art-based activities have been implemented to support children affected by conflict. These initiatives help children express their emotions and cope with trauma, fostering mental well-being and resilience.
These examples highlight the growing recognition of creative arts as a means to empower youth, support mental health, and promote social change in Nigeria.
