In a surprising development, reports suggest that Emmitt Smith, the NFL’s all-time leading rusher and University of Florida alumnus, is set to return to the Florida Gators as the new offensive coordinator. While official confirmation is pending, this move would mark Smith’s first foray into coaching at the collegiate level.
Smith’s illustrious career began at the University of Florida, where he played for the Gators from 1987 to 1989. During his tenure, he set multiple school records, including career rushing yards (3,928) and rushing touchdowns (36). His exceptional performance earned him unanimous All-American honors in 1989 before he declared for the NFL Draft.
Transitioning to the NFL, Smith was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in 1990. Over a 15-season career, he amassed 18,355 rushing yards and 164 rushing touchdowns, both standing as NFL records. Smith’s contributions were pivotal in securing three Super Bowl titles for the Cowboys in the 1990s.
Beyond his playing career, Smith has maintained ties with the Gators. In September 2024, he served as the honorary “Mr. Two Bits” during a game against Texas A&M, a role celebrating his legacy and ongoing connection to the university.
