In a bold trade proposal, MLB insider Scott Lauber suggests that the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets exchange former All-Stars: pitcher Taijuan Walker for outfielder Starling Marte. This hypothetical deal aims to address specific needs for both National League East rivals.
The Mets are currently seeking rotation support due to injuries sidelining pitchers Frankie Montas and Sean Manaea. Walker, who previously played for the Mets before signing a four-year, $72 million contract with the Phillies ahead of the 2023 season, could fill this void. Despite a challenging 2024 season with a 7.10 ERA over 19 games, Walker’s familiarity with the Mets’ organization and his prior performance—316 1/3 innings with a 3.98 ERA and an All-Star selection in 2021—make him a viable candidate to bolster their pitching staff.
Conversely, the Phillies are in need of a right-handed outfield bat, especially with injuries affecting Weston Wilson and Johan Rojas. Marte, currently the fourth outfielder in a crowded Mets lineup, excelled against left-handed pitching in 2024, posting an .884 OPS and a .310 batting average. His addition could provide the Phillies with a reliable platoon option alongside left-handed hitters Max Kepler and Brandon Marsh.
Financially, the trade appears balanced for the 2025 season, with Walker set to earn $18 million and Marte $19.5 million in his final contract year. However, Walker’s additional $18 million owed in 2026 could be a sticking point. Lauber suggests that the Phillies might need to cover this amount or include mid-level prospects to facilitate the deal. Despite the potential mutual benefits, the longstanding division rivalry between the two teams could impede the realization of such a trade.
