In February 2024, Tennessee Volunteers head coach Josh Heupel submitted a statement supporting the legal challenge by the Tennessee and Virginia Attorneys General against the NCAA’s Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) recruiting restrictions.
Heupel argued that the NCAA’s rules, which prevent recruits from engaging in NIL deals before committing to a university, deprive athletes of essential information, potentially leading to poor decisions and missed opportunities.
He emphasized that these restrictions could negatively impact athletes’ college experiences and future careers, as they might choose schools based on incomplete or unreliable information. Heupel’s statement underscored the need for transparent communication between recruits and programs to ensure athletes can make informed choices about their education and athletic careers.
