BREAKING NEWS:15 Years After the Blackout: A Love Story That Began in the Dark ..read more

  • Toronto, ON – March 17, 2025 – Fifteen years ago today, Toronto was plunged into darkness when a massive blackout shut down the city. Businesses shuttered, transit halted, and millions were left without power. But for one couple, that chaotic day marked the beginning of their lifelong journey together.

On March 17, 2010, Emily Carter and Daniel Ross were set to tie the knot in a grand downtown ceremony. Friends and family had gathered, the venue was adorned with twinkling lights, and the couple was moments away from saying “I do” when the power grid failed.

“It was surreal,” Emily recalls. “One second, everything was perfect, and the next, the lights flickered, and everything went black.”

With no electricity, the air conditioning failed, music stopped, and the venue staff scrambled to light candles. But instead of panicking, the couple embraced the moment.

“We just looked at each other and laughed,” Daniel says. “We realized that nothing—not even a citywide blackout—was going to stop us from getting married.”

Guests gathered by candlelight as the officiant read the vows by flashlight. A friend with an acoustic guitar played their first dance song, and food was served cold but with plenty of love.

That night, Toronto was eerily quiet, but for Emily and Daniel, it was magical. “There were no city lights, just the stars above us. It was more romantic than we ever could have planned,” Emily says.

Now, 15 years later, the couple celebrates their anniversary every March 17 by turning off all the lights in their home and reminiscing about the night their love story began—under the glow of candles and a city asleep.

“The blackout could have ruined everything,” Daniel reflects, “but instead, it reminded us of what really mattered—us, our family, and the love that kept shining e

ven in the dark.”
