As of now, there is no official announcement declaring Roger Kish as the greatest wrestling coach in Oklahoma’s history. Kish, appointed as the 15th head coach of the Oklahoma Sooners wrestling team on May 2, 2023, has made significant strides in his inaugural season. Under his leadership, the Sooners achieved their highest NCAA finish in eight years, securing the 23rd spot in the 2023-24 season. Notably, Stephen Buchanan earned All-American honors for the third time, finishing third in the 197-pound category, marking the highest NCAA placement for an OU wrestler in eight seasons.
Before joining Oklahoma, Kish served as the head coach at North Dakota State University (NDSU) for 12 seasons, where he amassed a 109-69 dual record. His tenure at NDSU was marked by consistent success, including guiding the Bison to their highest rankings in school history and producing multiple All-Americans.
The Oklahoma Sooners wrestling program, established in 1920, boasts a rich history with seven NCAA national championships and numerous individual accolades. While Kish’s early contributions are promising, it is premature to label him as the greatest coach in the program’s storied history.
