It is with profound sorrow that the world has learned that John “Ozzy” Osbourne — icon of heavy metal, frontman of Black Sabbath, and beloved entertainer — passed away earlier today. In a brief but heartfelt statement, his family announced:
“It is with more sadness than mere words can convey that we have to report that our beloved Ozzy Osbourne has passed away this morning. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask everyone to respect our family privacy at this time. — Sharon, Jack, Kelly, Aimee and Louis”
A Rock Legend’s Final Bow
Ozzy’s death comes just 17 days after his farewell performance, Back to the Beginning, with the original members of Black Sabbath in Birmingham on July 5, 2025. That show was meant to be both a final curtain and a celebration of decades of music, and the timing of his passing has cast it in even sharper relief as a true farewell.
Though the family’s initial announcement did not detail a cause, reports later confirmed that Ozzy died at his home in Buckinghamshire on the morning of July 22, 2025. His death certificate — filed by his daughter Aimee Osbourne — lists the primary cause as out-of-hospital cardiac arrest and acute myocardial infarction, with coronary artery disease and Parkinson’s disease with autonomic dysfunction noted as contributing factors.
Ozzy’s health in later years had been affected by Parkinson’s disease, which he publicly revealed in 2020. In past interviews, he also revealed that a 2019 fall had worsened existing spinal injuries.
A Life That Transformed Rock
Born in 1948 in Aston, Birmingham, Osbourne co-founded Black Sabbath in the late 1960s, pioneering a darker, heavier sound that would become the bedrock of heavy metal. Even when he was parted ways with Sabbath in the late 1970s, his solo career — with hits like “Crazy Train”, “Mr. Crowley”, and “No More Tears” — would cement his status as one of rock’s most enduring forces.
Ozzy’s persona — half-shaman, half-rebel, always unpredictable — captured the public imagination. He became notorious for stage antics and edge-pushing stories, yet behind the myth was a man who endured addiction, injury, and illness, surviving through sheer will and devotion to his craft.
Beyond music, he reached older and younger audiences alike with his family’s reality show, The Osbournes, which introduced a new side of the rocker: loving, chaotic, behind-the-scenes.
The Outpouring of Grief & Tribute
Immediately after news of his death broke, tributes poured in from every corner of the music world. Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward — his longtime Black Sabbath brothers — expressed their shock, sorrow, and eternal loyalty. Guitarist Zakk Wylde, who had long served as Ozzy’s solo band companion, posted a moving farewell message, saying Ozzy blessed “the world with your kindness & greatness.”
Elton John, Rod Stewart, Alice Cooper, Judas Priest, and countless others have shared memories and tributes of a man who refused to be confined by expectations.
On July 30, his funeral procession carried thousands of fans, who lined Broad Street in Birmingham in tribute. The cortege passed his childhood home, the Black Sabbath mural, and the Black Sabbath Bridge, and collected messages and flowers from fans along the way. Later, a private funeral was held with a gathering of family and close friends, including prominent musicians. He was interred on his family estate, Welders House, near a lake, per his wishes.
A Legacy That Endures
Ozzy’s passing leaves a void not only in rock music but in popular culture itself. Yet his influence remains — in the countless bands he inspired, in the raw emotions his voice could evoke, and in the bridge he built across generations of fans.
His farewell performance with Black Sabbath, seen by millions, will likely be remembered as his final gift — a statement that even in frailty, art and passion endure.
For now, the Osbourne family asks for privacy as they grieve and prepare to honor the man who defined their lives. In the words of their statement: “He was with his family and surrounded by love.”
Ozzy may have left this world, but his music, his spirit, and his legend will echo forever.
