Where Birmingham City’s new stadium will rank in the biggest EFL Championship grounds.. Read more..

Birmingham City’s proposed new stadium, part of the ambitious “The Wheels” redevelopment project, is set to significantly elevate the club’s status in terms of infrastructure. While full details about the final capacity are yet to be confirmed, early reports suggest it could accommodate around 50,000 spectators. If this becomes reality, the new stadium would immediately become the largest in the EFL Championship, surpassing the likes of Sunderland’s Stadium of Light (49,000) and Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough (39,000).

This marks a major shift for the Blues, who currently play at St Andrew’s, which holds just under 30,000. The move aligns with the club’s broader ambitions under new ownership, aiming to modernize facilities, increase matchday revenue, and enhance the fan experience.

Such a large capacity would not only make Birmingham City’s home the biggest in the Championship but would also rival many Premier League grounds. It signals intent for promotion and long-term sustainability at the top level. However, the ranking depends on actual completion, and whether the club is in the Championship when it opens. Still, the planned stadium stands as a bold statement of growth and ambition for one of England’s historic football clubs.
