Columbia, SC – In a powerful demonstration of community commitment, South Carolina Women’s Basketball Head Coach Dawn Staley has invested $3.6 million of her own money to transform a residential property into a safe haven for homeless youth. The initiative aims to combat rising youth homelessness across the state by providing not only shelter but also resources for education, mental health support, and life skills development.
Staley, a Hall of Fame coach and longtime advocate for youth empowerment, said the project was inspired by the stories of young people she encountered through outreach programs. “These kids need more than just a bed—they need hope, guidance, and a community that believes in them,” she stated.
The facility, set to open later this year, will offer transitional housing for teens and young adults facing homelessness due to family conflict, poverty, or systemic neglect. With partnerships from local nonprofits and educators, the shelter aims to serve as a launchpad for young residents to build brighter futures.
