ESPN REPORT: In a landmark decision that’s ignited passionate debate among fans, Tennessee Volunteers legend Peyton Manning has been voted the greatest college football player of all time, according to ESPN’s latest all-time rankings. Manning, whose remarkable collegiate career at Tennessee included over 11,000 passing yards and 89 touchdowns, has edged out other iconic names such as Herschel Walker of Georgia, Tim Tebow of Florida, and Archie Griffin of Ohio State—the only player to win two Heisman Trophies.
Though Manning never claimed the Heisman himself, his leadership, consistency, and football IQ redefined the quarterback position in the SEC during the 1990s. He led the Vols to a 39–6 record as a starter and helped elevate Tennessee to national prominence. Voters cited his impact on the program, his long-lasting influence, and his transition into a legendary NFL career as contributing factors.
Herschel Walker, once the gold standard for college dominance, placed second, with Tebow—a two-time national champion—coming in third. Archie Griffin rounded out the top four. While debates will continue across campuses and barrooms alike, ESPN’s poll cements Manning’s legacy as not just a Vols icon, but a titan in college football history.
